Pets

Waste less plastic on your pets:

  • You don’t need to buy special dog poo bags, even biodegradable ones. Remember if they are going into landfill, being biodegradable doesn’t help. Just use any used plastic bags you already have. Pet poo can be used in worm farms, bokashi systems and buried under ornamental plants and fruit trees.
  • Choose natural materials such as sisal and wooden cat scratchers. You can buy wool, leather, coconut and feather cat and dog toys from pet shops. Look for cat litter made from plant-based materials such as corn and wheat, which makes it easier to dispose of. Or opt for recycled paper litter.
  • Waste less plastic pet food packaging packaging: Make your own pet food. Buy off-cut meat and bones in bulk from the butcher, and make up your own pet food in large batches that can be frozen in small meals. Buy bulk petfood in the largest bag.

Waste less by buying secondhand for your pet:

  • Opshops have cheap secondand toys, balls and other playthings for your pets. They have ceramic, metal or plastic containers that make good pet bowls.
  • Kennels and hutches are often for sale second hand.
  • Use natural materials such as old towels, sheepskins and woollen blankets for pet bedding. Op shops often sell “pet blankets”. Sometimes SPCA or kennels welcome donations of such items but ask first. They may already be “overwhelmed with waste”.
  • If you look you are sure to find a lot of things at home for a pet, that you could repurpose rather than throw away. Save the money, energy and materials involved in buying new.

Waste less food:

  • Bread is one of our most commonly wasted foods. Yet it can be fed to lots of animals. Kids love feeding ducks. It can be also be used as a way of giving animals liquid supplements, like giving horses selenium. Save it in your freezer meantime.
  • Excess produce and vege scraps can be eaten by pets.
  • Expired food is often fine for animals.
  • Grow and collect your own chook food. King seeds sell Chicken Green seeds. They will forage for bugs if they are free range or in a chicken tractor. Flick your pest bugs their way.
